Full review
Zapling Bygone is a captivating metroidvania game that offers a unique twist on the genre. In this game, you play as an alien hive-mind with the ability to murder bosses and steal their abilities by wearing their skulls.
The gameplay mechanics are truly the shining star of Zapling Bygone. Each ability is gained by killing a boss and stealing their skull, which allows you to traverse the world in new and exciting ways while also giving you an edge in defeating your opponents. For example, killing the Ratking grants you the ability to climb walls, while defeating an ancient manufacturing robot lets you swing around using its claw-head.
Exploration is key in this game, as every inch of the alien planet serves as your playground. The world is interconnected and dangerous, but with your skulls at your disposal, nothing can stand in your way. Additionally, discovering game-changing mutations that enhance your abilities adds another layer of depth to gameplay.
The attention to detail in Zapling Bygone extends beyond gameplay mechanics. Find skull fragments that shed light on long-dead civilizations or unlock comic strip panels representing major events from each boss's life through memories accessed via their skulls. This allows players to piece together fragments of history from this post-apocalyptic alien planet one panel at a time.
In terms of environments, players will be enthralled by exploring six distinct biomes each with its own enemies, bosses and backstory. From Ratqueen Gardens overrun by monstrous plants and angry rats due to their king's demise to Grimtown—a fallen civilization plagued by an everlasting suffering virus—each biome offers unique challenges that keep players engaged throughout.
Overall,"Zapling Bygone" offers more than just another metroidvania experience—it provides a fresh take on familiar tropes within fantastic settings accompanied by intriguing storytelling elements- making it worth diving into for any fan of the genre.
