Full review

Covid Carl is a unique and engaging Metroidvania-style 2D shooter that combines action-packed gameplay with satire and a dose of self-awareness. The game follows the story of a player trying to stop a government project gone wrong, where instead of vaccinating people, it mutates them.

With its latest update, version 1.2, Covid Carl has added an abundance of new content to enhance the gaming experience. Players can now enjoy post-processing effects, encounter more enemies and hidden rooms, explore different player skins, and even experience reskins of some levels. The developers have made it clear that more exciting content and localization will be implemented in future updates.

The game's storyline sets the stage for an adrenaline-fueled adventure as you shoot or burn your way through waves of mutated soldiers. Covid Carl doesn't hold back on its over-the-top action elements – expect explosions galore as you annihilate everything that moves.

The gameplay mechanics allow players to run, jump, shoot their weapons with precision accuracy while also having the option to go prone when necessary. Be prepared for fierce battles against challenging boss fights throughout 10 captivating levels.

What sets Covid Carl apart from other games is its tongue-in-cheek approach towards societal elements during the Covid-19 pandemic. With heavy doses of satire woven into its narrative fabric, this game manages to balance fun-filled entertainment with insightful social commentary (or at least tries).

If there is one aspect where Covid Carl falls short – according to my personal experience – it's that I found myself dying more often than not while playing (though it could just be my aging reflexes at fault). Nonetheless, the unpredictable outcomes add an extra layer of challenge,
making each victory all the more satisfying.

Overall, Covid Carl may not be a AAA production, but it's clear that the dedicated developer has poured their heart and soul into creating this game. While the end result may have its flaws, it is undeniably a labor of love. And I can't help but feel like embarking on this gaming adventure with Covid Carl is akin to exploring an intriguing dumpster fire.

So if you're looking for a unique and self-aware gaming experience filled with action, satire, and even the possibility of wielding a flamethrower,

Covid Carl might just deliver that modicum of entertainment you've been craving.
